About the “Stop-Motion Animation”

The “Stop-Motion Animation” is a technique which realizes animation by drawing in the after-animation pattern design into texture beforehand and switching it as required.

There are other cases of calling it as “Replacement Animation”, etc.

With the “OPTPiX SpriteStudio”, this method is handled by the changes of the “Reference Cell” of the attribute setting of each parts of the animation.

Stop-Motion Animation Sample

The merits of the “Stop-Motion Animation” are as follows:

  • Easier to imagine the results of animation.
  • With most hardware, almost the same results of animation can be obtained because no interpolation operation, etc. is implemented.
  • Easy to define the movements of animation.
  • Application’s execution speed is less affected because of the reduced operation load to CPU.

On the other hand, demerits are s follows:

  • The image capacity increases when the number of pattern designs and frames used in animation increases.
  • Much labor when the content of animation is changed and when the variation is created.
  • There are certain cases that movements look rickety because it is the method of replacing the pattern design with a part of frame in the animation generally.

These merits and demerits make a pair with those of the “Key-Frame Animation” mainly, and their shared use is recommended in accordance with respective objectives and situations. Some examples are referred to the after-mentioned About different uses of the “Stop-Motion Animation” and the “Key-Frame Animation” .
